  • Headaches after sparring

I'm a new boxer, been training about 6, months, and just started sparring. As to be expected, I'm getting hit a lot, and it seems like after every sparring session I have, I develop a pretty nasty headache about 2 hours after the session that hangs around for days. I feel 100% fine through the entire workout, it just seems to be an aftereffect.

I'm starting to get a little concerned. Is it likely that I'm getting minor concussions every time I spar? I've never really had any sort of head injury so I have nothing to compare it to.

    Just looking for some comments.

no need to get worried, just try to keep getting better so you'll be hit less. it takes years of punishment for there to be a cause for concern, just make sure that doesnt happen by improving your skills.

pick yourself up some pedialyte and understand that your head is going to be pissy after getting knocked around for a few rounds.

Happens often when new boxers who aren't used to getting hit, get hit a lot.

Just keep going, work on your defence and guard and make sure you hydrate well before, during and after each session, taking blows to the head while dehydrated makes it much worse.

And also make sure you are using a decent headgear.

I had plenty of headaches coming up and plenty when I was fighting pro. Its part of the game and something that seems to ease abit after awhle. I had similar headaches when playing football, the collisions and such. It comes down to this, either you want to do it or you dont, headaches are just a part of the game. Like my tainer always said, "We're not playing golf here."................Rockin'

And dont forget, not every headache post sparring relates to a minor concussion or brain trauma. Bruising, dehydration, as well as tightness in the back and neck can be just as responsible for your headaches. Your neck muscles particularly take a fair bit of punishment in sparring.

                    Thanks for all the responses.

It's not really an issue as far as working though the pain, I can do that, and I feel fine when I'm actually in the ring. It was more of a "wow, am I supposed to have a migraine for 2 days after sparring?"
