  • Winning Boxing Gloves Are Overrated

Got to use some Winning gloves the other day, and at the moment, I'm not a fan. Not a fan at all. The gloves are rounded, so it's hard to land on the knuckles consistently. I feel as if I'm turning my knuckles over more than I normally would because of this rounded punch surface.

Does this bother anyone else? It really bothers me. I haven't sparred with them yet; just hitting the bag. Feels awkward.

I love winning gloves. Never been able to go so many rounds on the bag and feel like nothing at all. Pretty sure Redd Foxx owns a pair, but I don’t think he posts here anymore. I remember him saying he was a musician so he uses them for hand protection on the bag.

one thing I’ve noticed from following them on social media though, almost all fighters use winning in their training camps.

are they someone else’s gloves who let you wear them? They could be moulded to his hands causing the discomfort. I assume you’re wrapped up under?

Yeah! It's incredible how many guys use these gloves in the gym. Seems as if all the pros wear them now. There's a pro boxer (can't remember his name) but he had his name on his gloves, and he said that they lasted five years. And that's fiver years of constant use, so that's really impressive.

As to whose gloves they are, they are owned by a friend of mine. He just got them about a week or two ago, so I'm not sure how molded they are. He let me try them out because he said I should get a pair. I normally use Cleto Reyes. I have some Rival bag gloves too. The Cleto's have more a flat punching surface, which makes it easy to turn the punches over. But they are hard on the knuckles, and I can't use them for sparring. For sparring I have some Title gloves.

Anyway, I was thinking about getting some Winnings, but it just feels as if I'm curling my wrist more than I should to turn the punch over. Not sure.

Maybe they're too new still and that the gloves will reshape themselves after awhile? Sounds as if they form to the hand more so than normal gloves? Have you used Cleto's before? And if you have, do you notice a difference to how you land your punches?

I haven’t used Cleto’s just Winning and Rival. Being in Canada I have to buy Rival. Currently use the RB5 bag mits. Not for everyone obviously (they’re 4oz gloves) but great for perfecting form and keeping you from cheating when fatigue steps in. I’m about to buy one of their hydro bags in the coming weeks, so I think I’m going to need to get an actual pair of 14oz bag gloves again. Im open to Cleto suggestions.

and yeah, it could be that they’re so new, and starting to mould to his contours already. Same reason I’ll put my son in handmedown pants but not shoes.

Hey man, I love Rival. I'm on the fence as to whether I pick up the RS1 or RS100. I'm leaning toward the RS100 or Winnings. As far as Cleto's, I like the Precision gloves, but they can't be used for sparring for several reasons. They have a ridge on the backside, which can sc****. The padding is latex, so the knuckles can go threw easily. But they feel great on the bag and mitts. I use those more than anything else. They took FOREVER to break in though. Longer than any other glove I've used. I've also have the extra padding gloves, and I like those a lot too. You can use those in sparring if you don't mind a shorter cuff.

I use the Rival RB10 gloves for the bag (go back and forth so as to not wear one out too fast). Size L. Those weigh exactly 14oz. So that's awesome.

Anyway, I think if you were to get a Cleto glove, I'd get the Extra Padding Cleto's. I didn't have any discomfort with those gloves, and they didn't take nearly as long to break in. I had bought the Precision gloves along with the Extra Padding gloves because I couldn't make up my mind. Both are hook and loop, so if you're cool with that, then you'll like them.

So I guess Celto Reyes Extra Padding gloves, and if you want to stick with Rival, I definitely recommend the RB10s.

Yeah! You bet man. And I just want to make one correction. The RB10s Size L gloves actually weigh 12 oz, not 14 oz. So they are actually good gloves to use if you're a competing amateur. Good for the pads, bag, speed bag, etc.

Oh that's good to know! I'm close to forty now though, the record in my sig is from my early 20's lol. Just put that in there when I joined the site so people would understand that I knew more about the sport than an armchair fan who was 150lbs overweight

Ever tried the RB-50 compact bag gloves? They kinda bridge the gap between those mitts and dense bag gloves. I quit like them but don't have much experience with anything else.

Ever thought about buying those marine buoys instead of the aqua bags? Since I live on an island these things are everywhere and even brand new they're like half the price.

Polyform A-3 and A-4 are nice sizes lol. Some people say they are stiffer material though I dunno. Never tried a real one before. Used a free one for a while that was dragged out of the ocean but it started leaking so I peaced it out and bought a brand new one for $100 CAD. It has too much water in it currently and my left hand still hurts from bare-knuckle rage left hook to an inch thick piece of plywood one intelligent day a couple of months back. Feels like it will never heal. Want to get back into the swing of things here...
