  • Boxing Gloves

    Hello everybody!
So I first started training in some gloves that are supposed to only replace the padding ( i didn't know that back then, i thought they're MMA gloves), and I had a bruised knuckle and my fingers were bleeding a lot

Then I moved to some cheap 10oz boxing gloves, and I had no problem with them at all. I went full power, full speed, anything, and I didn't have any problem with my hands or anything.

Then I wanted to try something new, I bought some Adidas boxing pack, with a mouthpiece, wraps, and a 12oz pair of boxing gloves (made out of leather)
I didn't try them for a pretty long time since I couldn't use the heavybag anymore, but when I started using it again, and I started using my gloves I realised they're kinda tight.
And they're not tight to the point where I have no circulation, everything feels fine until I clinch my fist, which puts pressure on the top of my middle knuckle from my left hand
I didn't realise this was a problem until I started getting a bruised knuckle everytime I'd hit the heavybag
I've heard you gotta ,,break in'' the gloves, like sit on them or something to stretch them a little bit, but I didn't do that. I was planning to, but I guess since I used them on the heavybag quite some time they're already ,,broken in'', you can correct me if I'm wrong

The problem is now I don't feel like going on the heavybag at all, because I know the bruise is gonna come back. I thought my knuckle is broken, but no symptoms seem to match, if I don't hit anything for 2-3 days, my hand feels like new. Once I touch it, or hit it to something, it starts to hurt.

Is the problem at my knuckle, is it actually broken, or should I just break in my gloves and see what's up?

Does it look bruised? Does it look split?

To be honest, it does look A LITTLE BIT red, not red, but just slightly a little darker than my other knuckles. I don't think it looks split, I don't really know what that means. Is there any way to attach a photo/video of it?

Also I realised that I feel a little pain in my knuckle when I open my hand completely, but I don't feel any pain throughout the day

Did it happen to get any better since?

Hey there! It sounds like you've gone through quite a bit with your gloves. Based on what you're describing, it seems like the tightness of the gloves, especially when you clinch your fist, might be causing the pressure on your middle knuckle. It's common for leather gloves to feel stiff initially, so breaking them in over time is definitely something that could help. However, if you're still experiencing bruising, it might also be worth looking into different Boxing Gloves that offer better padding and fit, like the ones from Tussle Gear. Also, make sure your hand wraps are snug and provide support without cutting circulation. If the pain persists, though, it might be good to take a break and consult a professional to rule out any underlying injury. Stay safe and keep training smart!

Your gloves might be too tight, causing pressure on your knuckle. Try breaking them in by stuffing them with a towel or manually stretching them. Make sure you're wrapping your hands properly for extra support. Since the pain disappears after a few days, it’s likely soft tissue inflammation rather than a fracture. Rest, ice your knuckle, and consider switching to 14oz gloves for better padding if the issue persists.

Ah, the classic 'are my gloves wrong or are my hands just weak?' dilemma—been there! Your knuckle pain story gave me flashbacks to my first year training when I used cheap synthetic gloves that felt like punching with frozen turkeys. Here’s what I learned the hard way: Glove Fit vs. Knuckle Health
              1. Leather Needs Breaking In (But Not Like Shoes):
                • Sitting on them helps a little, but the real fix is heat molding:
                  • Wear them with wraps for 10-15 minutes of light bag work
                  • Then stuff them with socks while warm to stretch the knuckle area overnight
                • Warning: Adidas gloves often run narrow—this might be a long battle.
              2. The ‘Bruise But Heals Fast’ Test:
                • If pain disappears after 2-3 days rest, it’s likely just deep bruising (not broken).
                • But if it throbs at night or swells unpredictably, get an X-ray.
              3. 12oz for Heavy Bag?:
                • Unless you’re <130lbs, most coaches recommend 14-16oz for bag work—less knuckle compression.

Pro Tip: If you’re tracking recovery time vs. training hours (I once trained through bruising for weeks like a dummy), Caluladora de horas helps spot when to rest vs. push.

Ever tried rival gloves? Their wider hand compartments saved my knuckles. And hey—at least you didn’t duct-tape your hands like I did in 2012…
