  • The best, Most effective stance/style for a Southpaw?

What's the best stance for a southpaw that wants more defence than attack, so basically a counter punching stance.

I've looked at Pernell Whitaker and such with his weaving, Pacman doesn't really have much of a defensive stance.

What would be the best? and what's the best overall

The best Southpaw stance would have to be Southpaw. I had to think about that one for a while.

Orright then, the best stance is whatever allows you to score most effectively without taking shots. As with the orthodox position, it is generally the classic both hands up style. Some are effective while leaving the lead low, but it takes practice. Others like De la Hoya or Gerry Cooney are naturally left handed but boxed orthodox. So there really isnt one best type of stance to have if you are a southpaw. Try out different things while sparring but most trainers would suggest adopting the classic guard and stance position until you get more experienced

I'm a right-handed southpaw brawler. I use a peekaboo stance, slightly squared-up, and a bit of a crouch. Not as much as Jeffries did, but considerable. I use lateral movement and side-stepping more than retreating or darting forward.

One cool southpaw trick in this stance is to leave the elbows flared out a little to draw the straight right to the body -- wider elbows also negate the left hook to the liver -- and when that right comes in, sidestep, pivot, and drop the hammer on 'em with either a shovelhook or a short cross.

It depends on your abilities. Not everyone has Whitaker agility or Pacquiao's mixture of speed and power.

If you got a great coach, he will help you. He will see what your strong points are and build on them. If your coach is really a good coach that is, and not just in the owning a boxing gym business for a quick buck.

Owning a boxing gym business to make a quick buck is like becoming a pimp to benefit unwed mothers.

Thank god I have those abilities, now I just need to hone them, lol.

I generally fight with my right shoulder raise around my chin and have that hand bat down punches and throws jabs, while keeping the left hand on the otherside with it blocking it and also the body.

Whatever you do I would strongly recommend you keep your right hand up by your eyes and not down taking a nap near your hips. Without your lead hand up, orthadox fighters can strafe you with jabs fairly easily unless you have a very unique defense ala Whitaker.
