when I crossed over from bodybuilding and started to box i weighed 262 lbs, benched 440 lbs, i would consider myself slow for this sport....after 7 months of boxing and altering my weight routine to grueling high intensity interval training focused on olympic style lifting; i have lost 22lbs, my cardio is at a totally different level, i can actually say I have decent hand speed and my bench is still over 400lbs.....

If you want to get big like a bodybuilder it all depends on what you are shoveling down your mouth.....20% gym and 80% diet.....

there are olympic powerlifters who weigh 160lbs that can clean & jerk over 2 times their bodyweight...these guys are not muscle bound by any means.....and doing that is a lot harder than benching twice your bodyweight...

It is certainly true that benching double your weight is not a benchmark (pun intended) for success in boxing. Weight training for boxing shouldn't so much be a numbers game. All you need is an increase in general strength from doing the weights, since this increase in strength will actually provide a potential for increase in speed, power and explosiveness, which proper boxing training will help to convert it to.

The whole "muscle fatigue" thing is quite funny, really. I mean, no one complains about roadwork making you tired, and therefore it should be avoided by boxers, right? It is obvious that you shouldn't run sprints or 15k an hour before a fight. Same with weight training, you need to do it at the right time in your training program. Yes, recovering from it will leave you tired and feeling heavy sometimes, but so will every other form of training! That is the purpose of training; to forve your body to supercompensate, hence making you stronger, faster and more enduring.

PS: To the guy who said no boxer should be able to bench his own bodyweight: HAHA, I guess that just shows how weak you are! every man on the planet should be able to bench his own BW, if not, there is something wrong with you.
I stated a rest from weights, I can do cardio and other explosive strength training between this!

        What what what...........?

I can bench like 230.... but i never bench at all.. when i go by the gym at work (school) i sometimes lift wit the kids for fun.. (not often)......

So your saying you think something wrong with me because i bench 65 pounds over my weight?

i don't know alot but i just don't think thats right... you need to ask someone.

Hi Bizzle, I may be wrong here but I've got serious doubts whether an 11 stone guy can bench press 130Kgs, short of a semi pro or a powerlifter. You say your skinny so I'm guessing your at least 5,7.

I'm an 11 stone gym freak about 5 foot 9 whose been lifting weights for well over a decade and the bench press is my baby, pet exercise. On a 20-30Kg bar I struggle to do decent reps of much more than 37.5kgs a side (about 100-105 in total). I do the reps fairly slowly all the way down to the chest. I've never seen anyone my weight (stocky or skinny) come close to this without either jerking the weight, not going fully down to the chest and fully up at a sensible speed or having hands far from shoulder width apart. I'm sure there are some non powerlifting freakishly strong 11 stoners who can kick my behind at bench pressing, and I dont mean 11 stone guys who are 5 foot but as wide as a house.

But......that said I have to see this, please post a video of you benchpressing 130KG. It'll give me a whole something new to aim for.

I don't see the difference. If you're recovered enough to do explosive strength training, then you're recovered enough to do boxing as well.

I wouldn't even attempt it. I weigh 220, so a 440 press may kill me.

                  I weigh 195lbs. (14 stone)

When doing my chest in the gym I warm up with about 60k (10reps) then do..

                  Set 1 - 70k (10 reps)
                  Set 2 - 80k (10 reps)
                  Set 3 - 90k (10 reps)

Low reps (2-4) I'd probably lift between 110k-125k.

I'm never arsed about how much I lift compared to the next man though. The 'How much can you bench?' question is one only kids ask, as anybody who goes to a gym often can tell you.

Weight isn't important. It's all about technique.

Hi JBerg, good to have an another 11 stone guy show interest at a video. I started lifting weights and training about your age.

I'm guessing you'd be impressed at seeing a guy our weight bench pressing 130Kgs PROPERLY too?

I agree. I go to the gym 3-5 times a week and have NEVER seen a guy of 11 stone lift anywhere near 130kg. Infact I don't even think i've seen some of the bigger guys in my gym lifting 130kg. Say the bar is 20kg, If I went to the gym tonight and seen a guy of 11 stone do 4 GOOD, SLOW reps with 55kgs a side I would be VERY impressed.
