  • Training with rib injury

    Hi all,

Got smacked a beauty in the ribs during sparring late last week. Its been pretty sore, and I had the weekend off, but have training again tomorrow morning. Don't think its broken or fractured, just badly bruised.

Anyone had any experience with these type of injuries?

Even though its quite painful,I feel I could get through a workout, however, I don't want to go training again and aggrevate it and then be out for longer or do worse damage.

Don't plan on sparring till theres no pain whatsoever. Just wondering about doing bag work, pads, situps, pushups etc. Obviously the injuries to my core so its being used in everything. I'm concerned about aggrevating it. May just go along tomorrow and see how things pan out

If u think ur ribs are fractured/broken get it checked out 1st of all. A rib injury has a big effect on what u do, even if its not boxing related. Get it checked, n rest it until u feel ur not at risk of further injuring em. Better to lose a bit of time in the gym than to make it worse n be out longer

I had muscle brusing around my ribs after sparring and that very painful. I thought i broke a rib due to the fact I could not bend down or turn to the side quickly. I just went to the doctor and got antibiotics and stopped training full stop for one and a half weeks. It all depends on how serious your injury is.

Yeah just see how it is tomorrow. If you start to feel pain during those exercises, I would recommend taking some time off to let it fully heal. It's better to miss 1-2 days of training than to have to sit out a week or two for your ribs to fully heal.

            Good luck.

The problem as I see it is, there are many ways that ribs can be injured by a blow.

You could have something as simple as a bruise, meaning that there is blood pooling around the muscle and inflaming the area; you could have torn an intercostal muscle (the muscles that hold the ribs together) or even sprained an intercostal ligament; you might have torn the cartilage at the sternum, which is a common injury that feels exactly like a busted rib and takes a dog's age to heal; you might have sustained a bone bruise -- bruising of the marrow inside the rib bone, which is fairly rare with padded gloves; or you might have sustained a simple, hairline, or greenstick fracture.

It is entirely possible to do more than one of the above simultaneously, BTW. Rib injuries can be very complicated for this reason.

With the exception of the bruise, all of the above will get worse under strenuous exercise. If you don't have the resources (money, time, or insurance) to get it checked out with a sports physician, I would suggest that you STOP training immediately. Repeat: FULL STOP until it resolves.

If it's a bruise, it will be better in a few days and you won't have missed much training. If it's something more serious, you won't have ****ed it up worse. Take a breather. If you have to work out, I'd say take a spinning class and go hit on chicks for a week. "Yeah, I'm a boxer. Busted a rib sparring last week, need to take some time off."
