  • Handling someone's rush when sparring

I do pretty decent while sparring especially in our big ring at my gym because I am quick enough to get in and get out. But, I seem to have a problem when someone rushes at me with a flurry and I get trapped. Anybody have any ideas what my problem is? Anybody have any ideas to help me out? Obviously, you guys can't see me box, but do you think I get flat footed? Is there a good way to stop someone's flurry so you can regroup and start your own?

hmm, maybe a quick double jab to the face, then pivot out the way in a circle. (don't move straight backwards, it makes it easier for him to keep coming forward)

one way that works for me fairly often is sidestepping(actually angular sidestepping).

let's say that your opponent or sparring partner moves straight ahead into your space throwing a series of straight punches.

time it so that he is pretty close to you - within an arm's length. time it so that you step to the side that he is in the middle of throwing a punch from. from there, you can throw a quick combo that should land or atleast back him off of you for a second.

it is best to intercept his punch (parry his incoming punch) while you are stepping in so that he is in a position where it is very hard for him to block or counter. by stepping to the outside(and inwards) of his attacking arm, he is in a vulnerable position - you have 2 hands to attack his side while he has one arm to protect with. i mention the timing because if you can catch him in the middle of throwing, his arm will be extended for almost half a second or so and he will be defenceless for that small duration of time - enough time for you to initiate an attack.

i like to step in at an angle into the person so i that crowd his space and not just step to the side. if i am stepping to my right(his left) while he is in the middle of throwing a hook or power jab, i can counter with a quick hook to his head and a straight right to his body as i either move into him to tie up or step past him to a safe position.

i hope it makes sense for you guys. sometimes i write things a little different than how i see them.

Stay calm and don't panic otherwise you wont be thinking straight. I'd proberbly clinch and tie the bastard up if you feel like you'll be unable to manouvre yourself out proberbly. Otherwise, I like what J. says. Sounds pretty good, especially as he makes a point of turning the moment from his rush - to your counterpunch. Think i'll take note myself.

if your in the corner try keeping your hands up and when they get reasonably close unleash an upercut of your leading hand if it hits it'll hurt them and they will be discouraged to come close again with flurrys.

Clinching gets a bad rap on these boards. Grab his ass.

****** advice, throwing an uppercut when ur in the corner or against the ropes is definetely something u should not do. Just drop down low and come up to clinch when ur trapped

i meant when he comes in as he may be surprised. Not when he's real close as the chances are you'l get tagged by one of his shots
