  • Comments Thread For: Mayweather Trainer: McGregor-Van Heerden Sparring Could Be Staged

Nate Jones, assistant trainer to five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs), is not really paying any attention to the "leaked" sparring footage that shows UFC superstar Conor McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) being worked over by mid-tier contender Chris Van Heerden.

I know they have to sell the fight but stuff like this is just insulting peoples intelligence.

It's not staged anyway, it was genuine. Conor put it out with it edited so he looked good and then Van Heerden put it out unedited, if i'm not mistaken?

People say is this not a boxing match but an event?

              But what kind of event?

What's the selling point of this event that boxing people will pay for?

I don't understand the outcry over this sparring session in the first place. Everyone says Mcgregor looked like **** but I could have swore I saw him stagger Van Heerden. I thought Mcgregor won the sparring. Van Heerden is a long rangy 147 (just like Floyd to be fair) and he caught Mcgregor with some jabs as a result. That was it. All the nice power shots were landed by Mcgregor. Neither looked like they were going full out. I guess people are looking at the fact Mcgregor looked inexperienced and did some amateur moves in the sparring, which is true, but he's also a physical freak, much more powerful than Van Heerden, and as a result I thought he won the sparring session even despite all that.

So I really didn't see what other people saw. Right here it looks like Mcgregor hurt him with a lead left hand. In head gear. It's quick, no major stumbling, but that's what it looks like to me. His legs dip right after the shot, then he quickly starts retreating and bouncing left and right like he's trying to get his legs back, then he throws a weak jab just to buy time and keeps circling for like 10 seconds. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what I'm seeing.

You saw an unedited version?...If you have a link that would be clutch.

But the funny thing about sparring is that 90% of it is staged in the sense that guys are working on things. For example there's an awesome video on YouTube of Hearns and McCallum sparring.

I won't spoil it but when you watch you'll see the two working on one particular skill, but an untrained eye might miss it. There's a great Benn and Duran video out there two.

"It don't mean nothing. Styles make fights. Only sparring. Could have been staged. Tough competitor".

Still going to put my money where my mouth is on Mayweather to win this, at whatever odds the bookies have him at. Currently 1/6 (-600), it's like taking candy from a baby.
