  • Does the weakest chin heavyweight have a better jaw than the weakest chin flyweight?

I was wondering what is the science behind having a better chin? Some heavy's can take a ton of punishment from the hardest of hitters but if that same heavyweight smacked about an iron chinned Margarito he'd be dead probably.

Is it a case of they're bigger so they automatically have better chins? If that is the case, what is the reasoning behind it?

All things being equal the bigger the fighter the better the chin up to about 230 pounds. Giant fighters of 300 pounds don't seem to have better chins than normal sized heavyweights. If flyweights had as good of chins as heavyweights they would never get knocked down or out because no flyweight can punch even close to as hard as even a poor punching heavyweight.

Obviously because heavyweights punch harder than flyweights.....................

If I punched you in the jaw, you would go down.

Im not sure I understand your post. But I think HWs who can take a lot of punishment without being down or out are pretty rare.

What I'm asking is what's the science behind the bigger fighter having a better chin though, what can we point at and say that's why the bigger fighter has the better chin?

We know punching power can be attributed to technique, leverage, weight behind the punch (body weight/muscle) and also being born with it.

I hope my question is clearer for all to understand now.

Some ppl have better physiologic chin structure than others..

Evander Holyfield is gresat example. His success at HW was solidified by his chin structure, tougher than most.

Over a population it is completely indisputable than the heftier the population, the better the chin/resistance.

HW's as a population will ALWAYS have a better chin than the class below them and them the class below them as a definite fact. Physics ensures it and evidence and common sense.

Special examples can transcend the law. Holyfield for example, a natural CW, has a better chin than many natural HW's (atleast when he WAS a HW).

                Extra weight definitely helped Holyfield.

As a CW for example, nobody would argue he'd have been quickly knocked out by Mike Tyosn. But as a HW he could knock out Mike!

                You asked for science?

Bigger ppl have thicker necks (connective tissue+muscle+fat)

                Thicker/denser jaw and facial bones.

Ticker/denser cartilage, tendons, legaments, joints and other sinew.

                More collagen/elastin.

                More interstitial oil and water

Greater brain barriers (see medical term)

                Thicker/denser skulls

Larger brains in general to rock.

More muscle around face and cheeks and jaw (greatly protecting jaw.)

More fat around face and cheeks and jaw (even more greatly protecting).

Chin is also effeced to some extent by core and leg strength and balance (being "knocked over", not out and by stamina "being KO'd by being exhausted".)
