  • "Styles make fights" in the most overused phrase in boxing.

If you follow boxing, you've heard the phrase, "styles make fights", meaning that a fighter might struggle against a certain style of fighter, even if the other fighter isn't as skilled.

IMO, this is the most overused phrase in boxing. "Styles make fights" only applies when two fighters are relatively close in skill. If a fighter is significantly more skilled than another fighter, then it doesn't really matter what style they have.

in the run up to certain fights people can be unsure how good guys actually are & so when the fight goes a way that surprises people, they might say styles made that fight, until the actual levels of the guys are decided on several fights down the line plus guys get better at handling certain styles and do better against them over time

"Styles make fights" argument makes sense. It's correct but incomplete.

For instance, two pure boxers can fight and one is better than other. Other boxer can turn into brawler and beat him. There is no exact styles in boxing anymore. Best style is being complete fighter like Canelo, Crawford, Fury, Usyk etc.

They do not. An old fart scribe Grantland Rice coined the term in 1938 when talking about Schmellings right hand. The man never boxed a day in his life. Fighters and their skills make fights, not the limited styles in the sport of boxing.
