  • Former contender Alfonso Gómez is now broke and living on the streets

Straight from the horses' mouth (spanish speakers can corroborate this info):

Gómez is best known for winning third place in the reality tv show The Contender, hosted by Sly Stallone.

He holds notable victories over former world champs Jose Luis ¨Floydbeater¨ Castillo and Peter Manfredo Jr. He also KO'd Arturo Gatti into retirement

among the biggest names he challenged were Canelo, Miguel Cotto and Shawn Porter in world title bouts, but came up short against all of them.

He retired in 2015 and, according to himself, he squandered all his money in just 6 years.

He's now 41yo, totally broke and literally living on the streets, claims he lost everything, his money, family, career, health, etc, due to drug addiction

    Sad story

Floyd should offer the poor sob an exhibition fight

even now he'd be a better challenge than the Paul brothers or ¨Money kicks¨

Always liked Gomez and his family on the show seemed really nice too.

Sad he doesn't have anyone to help him get back on his feet

            Drug addiction is no joke

Wonder how much money he squandered?

Probably more money than we forum dwellers have ever made

which makes it all even more shocking

it reallly makes you think if legalization of drugs is a good idea.

it's obvious some people just can't control it, and usage will always turn into abuse with them

That's crazy. I still remember his Gatti destruction where Gatti fell down with a split up lip and blood pouring out. Says adios in the post fight interview and you think, damn, Gatti era is over and Gomez is tough! Then I remember Gomez shortly after getting obliterated by Cotto. His face was swollen to **** and I thought, Okay, well Gomez is done. He actually had some good money fights after the Cotto loss that included winning again. Surprised he went down the dark road. Probably didn't have the best support around him throughout everything. Sucks.
