  • James Toney Vs Mike Tyson!

Hello all. This is my first post on the forums. I've visited a lot before this and have seen lots of interesting discussions and debates. For my first post I'd just like to start a discussion of my own about my two of my favorite fighters.

Here's the fantasy scenario: Although Mike Tyson doesn't really fight anymore, what if he got his conditioning and skills as good as he could right now and he faced off against James Toney at heavyweight. Who would win? This is a fight that I don't think I could bear to watch, with one of my two favorite fighters inevitably having to lose...

However, if I had to pick who would win between the best possible Tyson right now Vs the best possible Toney, I'd go with Tyson. Of all the current big name heavies, I think Toney would be the kind of opponent best suited for Tyson, physically and stylistically. Tyson's abilities are no longer great enough to allow him to overcome the physically advantaged opponents that he once could. However, Toney has none of the physical advantages over Tyson that other heavies do. Furthermore, Tyson is really only vulnerable against opponents with heavy punching power, which is something Toney lacks at heavyweight. Tyson's best work is of course on the inside, where he can throw single power punches or combinations of them, while slipping at the same time. Toney's best work is also on the inside, where can land tight couterpunches at all sorts of angles. However, I think that Toney's inside counterpunching would be least effective against Tyson’s incredible inside dynamics and movement and his ability to deliver fast and accurate combinations of power shots. Finally, Toney would lack the means to prevent Tyson from getting on the inside, or at least punish him for doing so the way a bigger opponent could. I think that Tyson might be the only kind of opponent who could legitimately outpoint Toney but I would even venture to guess Tyson by late TKO/stoppage.

Anyway, I think this would be a very interesting matchup to see, or at least think about. Who do you guys think would win this fantasy scenario?

the tyson of now would do what he has done in his past couple fights, win early, then get frustrated and start losing and find a way to quit.

I think Toney would be too fast and fit for him, now. Basically.

The Toney of now against prime Tyson would be beaten soundly. Tyson's combos would have been too much for Toney.

Even the way Tyson is today, He'd take Toney's head off. The Fat Man couldn't take Tysons power. 1st round KO. There would be a great picture on the cover of SI, showing Tysons glove buried all the way to his wrist in Toney's gut.

he is shot........he is done.........its over

a prime tyson imo wouldnt have to much trouble beating toney though

toney ko early (3/4 rounds). If tyson cant beat a tomato can like Mcbride how could he beat a reasonably legit heavyweight like toney? i question the logic there

I'd love to see them go at it . Just think how great the trash talk would be for the build up . I do think Tyson would Ko Toney at some point even today 'I know I Know'. Tyson was only beat by much larger men then himself and Holyfield. In this fight he would not have to worry about Toney leaning down on him as he did with the 6'+ 230 + fighters. I don't think Tyson would run out of gas as fast in this fight which will give him enough time to land .
                Sorry JT much love

Well I certainly agree with you, but what I'm proposing is not prime Tyson Vs Toney now. Basically, I'm saying what if Tyson and Toney fought each other now, with Tyson getting himself back into fighting shape and honing his skills. Who would win then?

The Toney that fought Holyman woud've beat a prime Tyson. Styles make fights and Toney has the perfect style for a Prime Tyson.

Toney needs to be at 215 or 220, if the out of shape Toney from the Rahman and Peter fight shows up, a prime Tyson would've won.

BTW Tyson will lose easily today to an out of shape Toney. I don't think Tyson can beat the top 20 HW's today, if you lose to a guys like Mcbum then you really should never fight again.
