  • Please explain all these titles to me

Back in the day you had 1 champion per division.

Then it devolved into the WBC and WBA

Then later it devolved to the WBC WBA and IBF

Then it later devolved into the WBC WBA IBF and WBO

I am behind the game as I don't follow the current product with the zeal I had as a youth so please excuse me but.... what in the hell is an Interim champ, Silver champ,Super Champ etc etc ? Are there more I'm missing ?
So if you are an interim champion you are and will forever be considered a "world" champion ? What the hell is next ?

A belt for the worst fighter??? I'm at a loss to explain all these belts. Hopefully for the fighters it generates better purses because the word Title is attached to their names but for the fans it's confusing.

I guess the dream is alive for Tom Schwarz then.... How about a gatekeeper world title ? The stipulation is the title isn't on the against anyone else but another gatekeeper... LOL ! I realize it's a money generating scheme but still confusing as to what the so called stated purpose of all the "titles" within an organization actually are.

There are four belts and boxing is watered down. The best don’t fight the best because why bother? You can become a world champion by fighting the fifth best guy in the division and then talk tough.

Boxing is over, lads. There was a 90-100 year window when it was interesting and maybe worth watching. Now boxing is not worth a man's time.

People who still follow the game actively are fools, of course. There is nothing to follow. What would you follow, the negotiations between Spence & Crawford? I will never pay these promoters another penny for an overdue fight again. I am telling you it feels good to stand up to them and deny them money, the only thing they care about. There are currently two potential fights in the world that all fans would like to see, and neither of those fights is being made at all.

Deny them, you halfwits, it feels good.

            - -Well, you might qualify as a Silver Fan!

I would point out Ali was stripped after Liston and Spinks.

When Joe Louis retired undefeated, title was split and that just the heavies in the 40s-70s.

Silver fan might be too generous. LOL. Its really been hard following the sport the last decade or so for me. All these sanctioning bodies are like a cancer. Then on the NSB threads you have a bunch of morons arguing and taking sides about networks, promoters, who is ducking who, etc etc. I'm glad I grew up watching the sport when it was thriving. Now its just chaos. Sad.

The WBA spawned the IBF and WBO. And it's currently a joke with it's regular and super champions.

                A pox on them.

(Not that the WBC is much better with it's new Franchise Champion tag.)

OK. Been doing a little research on these titles to try and lessen the confusion among us. It's my sincere hope that by posting this, and after a respectable period of time,we can revisit this or create new posts to debate who was the greatest Interim,Silver,Diamond,Super, Eternal,Man of triumph and Franchise champions of all time. : ) Feel free to add any title I missed to this mess....... : )

                  Interim Champion:
An interim championship is an alternate title that is awarded by the four major sanctioning bodies of professional boxing (WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO), and in other combat sports such as kickboxing and mixed martial arts.

Occasionally, the champion of a particular weight division is temporarily unable to defend his championship because of medical, legal, or other reasons that are beyond the competitor's control. When this case occurs, two highly ranked contenders may fight for an interim championship of the same weight division – leading to two champions existing in the same weight division simultaneously. Once the original champion is able to return, he must fight against the interim champion in a "unification bout." The winner of this contest is then deemed the "undisputed champion." If the original champion cannot return, or transfers to a different weight division, the interim champion becomes the undisputed champion.

                  WBC Silver:
In 2010, the WBC created a "Silver" championship, intended as a replacement to interim titles.[1] Justin Savi was the first boxer to win a Silver title after defeating Cyril Thomas on April 16, 2010. Unlike its interim predecessor, a boxer holding the Silver title cannot automatically inherit a full world title vacated by the champion. The WBC continues to recognize interim and Silver champions, as well as interim Silver champions.[2] A year later, the WBC introduced Silver versions to its International titles.[3]

                  WBC Diamond Championship:
In September 2009, the WBC created its new "Diamond Championship" belt. This belt was created as an honorary championship exclusively to award the winner of a historic fight between two high-profile and elite boxers.[4] The inaugural Diamond Belt was awarded on 14 November 2009 to Manny Pacquiao, who won his sixth world title (in 5 different divisions) via a 12th-round technical knockout (TKO) over Miguel Cotto at welterweight in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Other holders of this title have included Mairis Briedis (cruiserweight), Bernard Hopkins (light heavyweight), Callum Smith (super middleweight), Sergio Martínez and Saúl Álvarez (middleweight), Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (super welterweight), Errol Spence Jr (welterweight), Regis Prograis (super lightweight), Nonito Donaire (super bantamweight & bantamweight), Léo Santa Cruz (featherweight), Jean Pascal, Sergey Kovalev (light heavyweight), Mikey Garcia (super lightweight) and Jorge Linares (lightweight). Although this title can be defended, it is not a mandatory requirement. The title can also be vacated in the case of a fighter's long-term absence or retirement from boxing.

                  WBC Eternal Championship:
WBC Eternal Championship is an honorary title awarded to dominant champions that have never lost a world title, and retired undefeated while having a solid number of successful title defenses. Jiselle Salandy was awarded the Eternal title as she defended the WBC female super welterweight title five times before her death on January 4, 2009. On December 12, 2016, Vitali Klitschko was recognized as "Eternal Champion", as he had ten successful WBC heavyweight title defenses during his career before his retirement in 2013 and has never been knocked down throughout his career.

                  WBC Franchise Championship:

According to the WBC official site it is: a WBC Franchise champion designation has been established to provide a unique status to those fighters who prove to be of an elite level and stature, those who compete and have activity in multiple divisions, those who have accomplished success in the ring and hold a proven and unquestionable stature in the boxing industry.

                  WBA Man of Triumph:
Since 2015, the WBA awards a customized version of their Super Champion belt to big fights involving a WBA championship. The WBA called this the Man of Triumph belt, named after the trophy awarded to the winner of Mayweather–Pacquiao fight. The plate of the belt has the images of the two boxers fighting. Floyd Mayweather Jr. received the first Gold-plated version of the belt while Manny Pacquiao was awarded a one-time Rhodium-plated version.[14] Other recipients of the custom Gold-plated belt are Anthony Joshua,[15] Vasyl Lomachenko,[16] Manny Pacquiao,[17] Oleksandr Usyk,[18] Canelo Álvarez[19] and Callum Smith.[20]

It was basically a disagreement over who was really the champion, which was fine at first when you had two belts, but when a 3rd was added, that was too much. Go back to two and unify or at least do away with the ridiculous fees, require champions to either unify or be lineal within a certain number of fights or be stripped and if the fight can't be made, strip the guy whose being more unreasonable or strip them all and make contenders fight each other. Ring used to be the one, now TBRB is trying to step in and be the authority on lineal titles. They just need to create a title belt of their own now and have the same strict requirements The Ring used to have and stick with them.
