  • When did Heavyweight stop using 8oz gloves?

Today if up to 147lbs you can wear 8oz gloves, but are 154lbs and over you have to wear 10oz gloves.

Anyone know when Heavyweights were required to wear 10oz gloves?

That's a good question. I've only been able to guess it was sometime in the 80's.

Wasn't it around the same time they phased out 15 rd fights, in the 80s.. I think it was post Mancini-Korean fight and around the time the IBF came around

I think it became universal across the board with the main organizations around 1983.

I believe the WBA beat the others to the 10 ounce rule. not sure when but they were already in use for the Weaver-Coetzee fight in 1980.

Otherwise it was different states - different rules prior to that.

Ali and Norton fought twice in California using 10 ounce gloves in 1973. Three years later they met for the third time, in New York and used 8 ounce gloves.

Around 1948 some states upped the limit from 6 to 8 ounce for the bigger guys.

By the start of the 60's there was a push to increase it again to today's 10 ounce limit, again some states implemented it and some didn't.

But then being boxing, those governing often went against their own rules when it suited - when Ali came to town to face Chuvalo in 1972, the Vancouver Athletic Commission decided 10 ounce gloves were to be used, despite the rules stating the use of 6 ounce gloves.

Was Joe Louis mostly using 6 oz gloves during his championship reign?

I would say yes - the first note I've got regarding his glove size was in 1936 for the first Schmeling fight, both Conn fights, 1941 & 1946 and the second Walcott fight in 1948. Not sure if any fluctuation during championship reign but would think it unlikely.

During his "retirement" Louis fought plenty of "exhibitions" in 10+ ounce gloves, not sure on the glove size for the Charles fight in 1950 but would imagine also 6 ounce were used.

I think 8oz gloves should be allowed at any weight these days. I don't like all these stringent safety protocols.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like boxers getting hurt permenantly but boxing is in itself a dangerous sport. 6oz-8oz gloves were OK for a very long time in boxing. Instead you've 154lbers using real big gloves these days.

One of the reasons the AIBA didn't introduce 10 ounce gloves at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico was because their medical officers deemed them to be "only" 18% safer than 8 ounce gloves - apparently not significant enough to compensate for the perceived negative impact on the boxers' skills.

No idea where they got those figures or their accuracy, but interesting that they rejected it on grounds of skill impediment.
