Yes, he refused to fight Doyle because of the dream but after being convinced he fought Jimmy, and took his life. Robinson was extremely emotional after his death.
I think this is a Robinson myth, one of his own creation.
He postponed the fight twice, both times on account of cuts suffered in Abrams contest.
There were claims that Robinson really delayed the original end of May Doyle meet because of his inability to make weight.
He only brought out the dream story after Doyle's death, and it was never mentioned in the coroners investigation.
Doyle's death was the first involving a championship fight.
Well of cource it could only come from him, it's not like anybody else could screen Robinson's dreams on a monitor.
I don't find this story far-fetched. When a boxer is preparing for an opponent he is very fixated on him, this could cause him to dream about him and I've heard fighters say before the fight "I've dreamed of defeating him already".
Robinson may or may not had the dream, but he did give two versions, three nights before or the night before.
The first time he mentioned the dream was after the coroner cleared him of any blame.
At the same time as Robinson floated his dream story, two others were also put out. The other premonitions were from Doyle's brother Edward Delaney and an unnamed "sports writer".
It's an established part of Robinson's lore. For me I need a bit more before I'm sold on it.
It would help if you elaborated on what these "versions" were.
I remember hearing that after the fight and aftermath with Doyle the media was in uproar because Robinson had previously admitted that he dreamt he killed him. Something like they wanted to arrest him for murder like he had preconceived plans of killing him in the ring. I know Robinson was distraught after the fight from what he had done so I don't think it was a made up ploy to boost his celebrity.
