  • Fighting Tommy Loughran

I have a question does anybody know anything about my grandfather's father that were boxing against Tommy Loughran on clubs in Philadelphia around the 20/30? His name was Tage Viklund and was from Sweden. They were very good friends and used to spar with each other. He had a boxing name, but my grandfather unfortunately doesn't remember it. They were sparring partners but if i don't remember wrong they did real boxing matches but only for fun. His full name was Ernst Tage Emanuel Viklund he was in Philadelphia his second time Apr 07, 1923 he had a brother with the name John Emil Baaz he came there in april, 30, 1917 he was married in Philadelphia before he returned to Sweden some years later with Tage. We still got family in Philadelphia but we doesn't have any contact with them unfortunately. I will be very thankful if somebody knows anything!

    Best regards

Sorry Emil, I know nothing about your great grandfather, but a thread about Tommy Loughran, is a great idea, and hopefully, it'll catch the attention of someone who may of heard of him.. No disrespect, and please excuse my ignorance, but I thought the only boxer to have come from Sweden, was Ingemar Johansson.

Loughran was an amazing fighter who relied on skill, finesse, and superb conditioning.. An old trick he employed throughout his career, was to make sure he finished every round in his own corner, so he got maximum respite while his opponent walked.. Tommy wasn't a hard puncher, quite the opposite infact, but his movement and ringcraft were exceptional, and so was his resume.. Beat guys like Georges Carpentier, Harry Greb, Mickey Walker, Young Stribling, Max Baer, Jim Braddock, and drew with Gene Tunney, which for a non-puncher, puts him as arguably, a top ten lhvwt of all time..
Ernst Tage Emanuel Vikland was very honoured indeed.

I dont know how much you know about the sport, but a good place to start looking for info, is boxrec.com.
