i would have to go with Eubank, i was at their fight in Sheffield in 97 and wether you like Eubank or not he was one very tough and exciting fighter.. when he enters the arena to his theme tune"Simply the Best" the atmosphere was electric, Calzaghe put Eubank down with a brilliant left-hook only seconds into the fight yet Eubank got to his feet almost immediately and put up a tremendous performance for the next 12rds losing on points yet he had taken the fight on only a couple of weeks notice after dropping down in weight after fighting at Light-Heavyweight.. Calzaghe was the faster of the two but Eubank was by far the tougher.

I would go with a prime (pre-Watson) Eubank to beat the Calzaghe that fought on that night, Calzaghe was better later on in his career imo and would of gave a better fight but I think a prime Eubank would still have him.

I grew up watching Eubank on the box but id have to go with Calzaghe, one thing Eubank did not like was to fight at someone else's pace, plus i think Calzaghe is technically better, Eubank used to reach a lot with punches and leave chances for the opponent to counter, particularly if had to come foward.

Both very tough guys and i feel a fight between them prime for prime would have been an absolute war

Id pick calzaghe to win a close decision

I got to go with Joe, on this one. I can kind of see Joe as an improved version of Watson. He has just as high workrate, faster hands and an iron chin. I think the fight could play out the same as watson eubank II, with calzaghe winning by decision.

Seeing as the thread implies the version of Calzaghe that fought Eubank in 1997, I'd honestly go with prime Eubank.

The Eubank which fought Calzaghe in 1997 was preparing for a light heavyweight match, he had only what seemed to be a few days to shed an additional half stone (7Lbs)!

So......he was weak at the weight, at least three years post prime, he had had negligible southpaw sparring, he had only had two fights (well outside of world class) in two years since the last Collins defeat. And he still to this day gave Calzaghe what Joe refers to as 'my toughest fight'. Joe looked out on his feet at the 12th round ended and was shipping hard Eubank right hands.

Prime Eubank would surely have taken a decision over 'this' Calzaghe.

BUT I wouldn't bet on the result if the Calzaghe from the Lacy fight turned up. Joe improved with age!

Prime Eubank (1991/92) vs Prime Calzaghe (2005) is a pickem fight.....too tough to call for me.
