  • Punchers and hand size, wrist size

I am sure these topics have come up before in the past but I was still thinking about this again wondering about a correlation. Certainly there will be exceptions but the big punchers consistently have above average measurements for their fists and wrists.

Just some random lists I scooped up online. One for fist size:
    Sonny Liston: 15 inches.
    Primo Carnera: 14 3/4 inches.
    Frank Bruno: 14 inches.
    Bonecrusher Smith: 13 3/4 inches.
    Rid**** Bowe: 13 1/2 inches.
    Mike Tyson: 13 inches.
    Wladimir Klitschko: 13 inches.
    Joe Frazier: 13 inches.
    George Foreman: 12 1/2 inches
    Evander Holyfield: 12 1/2 inches.
    Muhammad Ali: 12 1/2 inches.
    Lennox Lewis: 12 inches.
    Earnie Shavers: 12 inches.
    Joe Louis: 11 3/4 inches.
    Rocky Marciano: 11 1/2 inches.
    Jack Dempsey: 11 1/4 inches.
    Vitali Klitschko: 11 inches.

For better reference though I can't find what the average size for males is, somewhat of a failure on my behalf.

Also I wonder about the stats there since this was supposed to be a life size photo of Ali and Foreman's fists and you can tell George had more size overall:

Don't have a list for wrist size but I know Tyson and Foreman had 8inch wrists, Marciano 7.5 which is pretty big for his size. It makes sense that the transfer of force would be more devastating delivered by a thicker bone mass.

    Nothing beats this monster though.

The average males hand is 7.6" in length and 8.6" in circumstance from what I just found. My own fist is 10" in circumstance and when Iet George Foreman and shook his hand his seemed so much bigger. Hard to imagine how big Listons fists were.

A lot of people who met Foreman and shook his hand say the same thing. Same about Lennox, some mentioning that their hands 'disappeared' into his hand when they shook it. Looking at the list, I wonder if swinging these big lunchboxes around decreased their handspeed. You think a lot of these punchers with the huge fists tend to have the slower, clubbing shots? Liston, Foreman, Smith, Bruno, Shavers etc.

Interesting how these genetics vary. Valuev the largest HW we've seen had smaller hands than the 6'1 Liston funny enough.

I don't think it decreases speed. You gotta remember these guys have been carrying those ham hocks around their entire lives. Speed is something you either have or do not have. I'm no doctor and do not understand all the physiology behind it. From the list you provided tough there are some pretty fast to very fast fighters on there. The two slowest probably being Carnera and Marciano, and I'd bet the the average guy they'd seem pretty quick. As far as the clubbing punches go, I'd venture to say some of those guys may not have had the same reflexes of some of the faster fighters you listed, and some were just not as fundamentally skilled probably going back to when they first started training. All guesswork on my part though.

It is a very good question. Certainly big mitts are less susceptible to injury because the bones are larger. This allows applying more force without concerns for personal injury. I doubt if Liston was ever concerned with hand injuries and maybe never had one. Bone girth allows for harder punching without concern, but whether it makes for harder punching in general is one of those mysteries right in front of us.

            - - There is no consensus on how to measure wrist size like most things in boxing that can be doctored.

All those guys who measure wrists should get together and straighten this out.

Yup just yesterday I saw some spooks coming out of the local home depot. I saw they had doctored tape,measures... Before one could simply account for any tape past the point where the measurement started, and ended, and subtract the extra length, but what will we do now with this latest conspiracy!!?
