  • Worst Well-known cases of Pugilistic Dementia in Famous Fighters thread.

    Introduction:

Dementia Pugilistica (DP) is a form of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). It is predominant among athletes and sportspeople who suffer concussion, e.g, football players, wrestlers, boxers, etc, and present essentially with characteristics of dementia. It is also referred to as chronic boxer's encephalopathy, traumatic boxer’s encephalopathy, boxer's dementia, chronic traumatic brain injury associated with boxing (CTBI-B), and punch-drunk syndrome. Dementia Pugilistica was once considered as CTE but is now reckoned as a subtype of CTE.

It is caused by concussive, sub-concussive blows or both. Symptoms progressively develop over a latent period sometimes up to a decade. It was first described by a forensic pathologist, Dr. Martland in 1928 when he noted tremors, slowed movement, confusion, and speech problems as characteristics of the condition.

    My half dozen to start:

    Battling Nelson
    Ad Wolgast
    Ralph Dupas
    Jerry & Mike Quarry
    Young Griffo
    Jimmy Young

Have you read “DAMAGE” by Tris Dixon? Fantastic read. I felt like if it had been about football players or a more popular sport, it would have won major awards.

Terry Norris use to have full on sparring sessions with his brother Orlin for years. I had a friend that trained and sparred with them and he said they would go at it ike they were trying to kill one another.

Guys like Benitez and Young are always surprising to me given their defensive prowess. But you can never tell with this kind of yhing.

Hearns does seem to be speaking slower than he used to, but everyone close to him swears he still has all of his faculties. It’s odd, but James Toney is another where I used to think he was basically ****ed but then I noticed he still answers questions quick and honest, but it sounds like his tongue is 3x too big for his mouth.

Benetez didn’t like to train. Lazy camps. He was also fighting as a pro (in world title fights) as a teenager. Brain wasn’t even fully developed.

                  That's a very good point.

Reports on Hearns vary, indeed it seems like he's not at the dementia stage yet, but some signs are there, unquestionably.

In regard to Toney, I believe his speech is slurred because of fat. He has an eating disorder if I remember correctly, and that stuff is not good for blood circulation... including the brain.
