Mickey Bey is returning to boxing with hopes of becoming one of the oldest titleholders in boxing history.
Bey faces Oscar Escandon in an eight-round bout on Saturday at Newtown A.C. – "The NAC," in Newton Township, Pennsylvania, as part of a Swift Promotions card. The bout will be contested at a catchweight of 132lbs, with Bey alluding to his final run taking place at junior lightweight. Bey previously held the IBF lightweight title in his career.
Bey, 25-3-1 (13 KOs), is now 41 years old. His last major fight was a split-decision loss to George Kambosos Jnr in 2019. Since that bout, Bey, whose moniker is, “The Time Machine,” has gotten two knockouts in Mexico. This will be his first consequential fight stateside since his loss to Kambosos. Bey, who resides in Las Vegas, revealed his intentions.
“It's going to be kind of shocking,” Bey told BoxingScene. “I got to fight and prove it, which I like, but I am probably going to look better than what people saw from me, because a lot of times when I was fighting a lot of top fights, it was on three or four-weeks’ notice against guys like Kambosos.”
As for fighting late in his career at a new weight, Bey explains that it was his weight class all along.
“That was my weight. I just got a title fight first at 135lbs because nobody wanted to fight Miguel Vasquez at the time,” Bey said. “I just stayed there.”
In 2022 and 2023, Bey tried three times to fight Tevin Farmer but the bout never occurred. Bey is also finding inspiration in Farmer’s late career resurgence as he hopes to challenge up-and-comers.
“It did because Tevin is one of them dudes that's a dog, like me, that'll fight anybody,” Bey said. “By us coming back to fight each other off a layoff, it got us back in the boxing game. But of course, his career has taken off a little faster than mine, so it motivated me, and this fight, a win here, should propel me to some big things.”
Escandon, 27-10 (18 KOs), a former title contender at featherweight, has spent the past few years testing up-and-comers. Escandon, a 40-year-old who resides in San Jose, California, is entering the contest having been stopped in his last four fights. Bey hopes to have his late resurgence run.
“I don’t have a whole lot of time, but I've got a good enough amount of time to make a nice run,” Bey said. “My goal is to become one of the oldest champions in the history of boxing, top five or 10. I think I got that chance. So, that's my goal.”
