At the ongoing WBC convention in Bangkok, WBC junior middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., and WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, were given until December 15th to decide their futures. The World Boxing Coucil wants to know which belt Mayweather is planning to keep, his WBC title at 154 or 147. Mayweather will likely remain at welterweight, which is going to open the door for the two top contenders, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Sergey Rabchenko, to fight for the vacant title.

In Martinez's case, the WBC wants to know his health status and when the boxer can make a mandatory defense against Marco Antonio Rubio. Rubio's team submitted a motion to the WBC that discourages Martinez's promoter, Lou DiBella, from negotiating a fight with Miguel Cotto. Martinez's adviser, Sampson Lewkowicz, requested an interim-fight between the two top contenders, a request that the WBC denied.
