Gervonta Davis successfully produced an explosive performance by scoring knockdowns in rounds two, eight and 12 and landing 48% of his power
punches, but he also showed the ravages of his weight-making issues in terms of his energy supply as he averaged just 28.1 punches per round against Yuriorkis Gamboa.
The 12th round TKO enabled Davis to win the WBA "world" lightweight belt against the 38-year-old Gamboa, who was badly hampered early by what Gamboa said was a ruptured Achilles tendon that occurred during the second-round knockdown.
Davis' impact and impressive accuracy (37% overall, 21% jabs, 48% power) as well as his excellent defense (13% overall, 3% jabs, 21% power) enabled Davis to gain connect leads of 120-78 overall, 27-9 jabs and 93-69 power. This fight also marked the first time Davis was extended past round nine, but while he had enough in the "tank" (pun intended), his conditioning and commitment to proper training will be questioned. Scores entering round 12: 109-98 (2x), 109-97 D.
