LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND – Andrew Cain expects to deal with Charlie Edwards emphatically before turning his attention towards the WBC bantamweight champion Junto Nakatani.
Cain defends his British and Commonwealth bantamweight titles against Edwards on Saturday at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool. Edwards, 32 and a former flyweight world champion and European bantamweight champion, is a big step up from the opposition Cain has so far faced. The 28 year old has regardless made light work of his domestic opposition, and is full of confidence heading into a tough test against Edwards.
“He's a good fighter, I'm not looking past Charlie Edwards,” he told BoxingScene. “Everybody knows what he's going to do; he's going to come and try and steal a little victory from me, but it's not happening mate. I can box; I can do it all.
“So whatever he brings to the table, if he comes to fight with me – I'll knock him out. If he comes to run away and try and score points – I'll knock him out. So whatever he brings mate, he's getting KO'd on Saturday.
““It's a good fight and it's one that I can't wait for, and I’m right up for. I'm confident in myself and what I do, and I'm confident against any fighter in the world – anyone – especially at this weight that I'm at now. But I don't think any of them have been hit like the way I want to hit them.”
Victory will also take Cain further up the WBC rankings, which are led by the highly regarded Junto Nakatani of Japan. He was therefore asked if a shot at Nakatani would be his favored next step.
“Of course it would mate,” he replied. “There's nothing more in the world that I want, but we've got a job to do on Saturday first. Then we'll go back to the drawing board after that and we'll work out what's next. I'm ready for anything.
“After this one I want to be challenging for world titles – if not a fight or two in between. Whatever Frank [Warren, my promoter] can sort for me, but after I deal with this fella in the fashion that I'm going to, there's only one way for me to go and that's world titles for me.
“I've only seen highlights of [Nakatani] and what I did see is he looked like he was quite wild. He's a good boxer but he looked like he was swinging big, long, looping, wild shots and if he tries that against me I'll counter him and I'll catch him.”
