Adam Azim has called out George Kambosos following the Australian’s defeat to Richardson Hitchins for the IBF junior welterweight title.

Kambosos took on Hitchins on Saturday night in an attempt to become a two-division world champion. The Australian previously held world titles at lightweight after he upset Teofimo Lopez back in 2021 for the WBA, WBO, and IBF straps. Kambosos then lost his titles to WBC champion Devin Haney in 2022.

After failing against Haney in a rematch four months later, and losing to Vasiliy Lomachenko 13 months ago, Kambosos moved up to 140lbs. In March, he pipped Australian domestic champion Jake Wyllie over 10 rounds in his junior welterweight debut and then travelled to New York’s Madison Square Garden to take on IBF champion Hitchins last Saturday.

The fight was a mismatch and Kambosos was stopped in the eighth round by a left hand to the body. The loss was the now 32-year-old Kambosos’ fourth in six fights, and having only beaten Wyllie and Maxi Hughes – somewhat controversially – in that time, it looks as though his time at the top level was spent. The Australian, now 22-4 (10 KOs), even hinted at retirement with a post on social media after the loss to Hitchens, but he may have been given another opportunity in a big fight.

Adam Azim, 13-0 (10 KOs), has gained traction in the United Kingdom, cementing himself as one of the brightest prospects at 140lbs in the process. The 23-year-old is coming off his biggest win, a ninth round stoppage of former beltholder Sergey Lipinets. The Brit was recently scheduled for a runout against Eliot Chavez on the undercard of Callum Simpsons’ European title win over Ivan Zucco ahead of a “major fight” later this year.

The bout was cancelled on fight day due to Chavez using a sauna to make the agreed weight limit. Azim now looks to have hinted at a date and an opponent for that “major fight”.

BoxingScene put out a social media post on X following Kambosos’ defeat to Hitchins asking what is next for the Australian? Azim was quick to reply, saying: “@GeorgeKambosos let’s get it on - Sept 25.”
