LAS VEGAS – The bigger, younger Jaime Munguia narrowly outweighed Saul “Canelo” Alvarez ahead of Saturday night’s undisputed super-middleweight title fight.

The Mexican rivals will fight at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, on the occasion of Cinco de Mayo weekend, after Alvarez, 33 and the defending champion, weighed in at 166.8 pounds – 1.2 under the super-middleweight limit – and Munguia came in at 167.4 pounds.

“I feel really good,” Alvarez said. “I feel in my prime; I feel in my best, because I’ve got no injuries anymore, so I feel my best right now. I’ll show you guys on Saturday night. I’m in my best shape – ever.

“I’m so happy to be here. I want all of Mexico to enjoy this fight. It’s gonna be a great time, and most of all – viva Mexico.

“I’m gonna put on my best. I’m gonna put on all of my experience; my talent, and win the fight. Win, and I hope they all enjoy this fight, because it’s for Mexico.”

Munguia, 27, enters Saturday’s fight with a slight size advantage, and he said: “I’m so excited. It’s a great opportunity. I’m going to take advantage to the fullest and tomorrow I’m going to be the new world champion.

“The [confident] energy’s from the preparation that I had, which I tried to the fullest. It’s from my team; from my family; from all of you guys here supporting me; cheering me on. That’s the energy you feel right now.

“It’s gonna be a great fight. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us, and most of all, viva Mexico.”

The most appealing fight on the Alvarez-Munguia undercard is perhaps Brandon Figueroa-Jessie Magdaleno, for the WBC interim featherweight title. The 32-year-old Magdaleno, having weighed in at 128.6 pounds, 2.6 above the featherweight limit, is not eligible to win the title, but Figueroa, 27 and having weighed 125.4 pounds, is eligible to defend it.
