Former cruiserweight and heavyweight world champion David Haye is looking to land the biggest fights possible in the near future. One of the biggest options for him is a domestic showdown with rising heavyweight Anthony Joshua (15-0, 15KOs).
Next Saturday at the O2 in London, the 35-year-old Haye will return to the ring for the first time since a July 2012 knockout of Dereck Chisora. The comeback opponent is Australian puncher Mark de Mori, who vowed to score a knockout victory within four rounds of action.
Haye's inactivity has been due to injuries, including shoulder surgery which nearly ended his career. He brushed off any suggestion that he might need a few more ring appearances to prove himself ready for a Joshua fight.
The former champ sat ringside last month as Joshua survived a rough start, only to adjust and score a big knockout of rival Dillian Whyte.
"You've got Anthony Joshua, who is looking amazing," Haye (26-2, 24KOs) told Soccer AM. "I commentated on his last fight a few months back against Dillian Whyte, when he answered a lot of questions. He got hit on the chin, came back and knocked out Dillian Whyte. Fifteen fights, 15 wins, 15 knockouts. He's big, 6ft 6in, ripped, young, fresh. That's the type of fight I like the sound of."
"What are you talking about [if I'll be ready for this kind of fight], 'It's a good question'? I'm the former heavyweight champion of the world. I'm a former cruiserweight champion of the world. After Saturday, people will then realise, 'He's back'. The Hayemaker is back, bigger and better, ready to go.
Haye is hoping the Joshua fight can have a world title at stake or become a final eliminator for a potential world title shot. Joshua is highly ranked in the WBC and the IBF - and could be within touching distance of being ordered to take part in some form of an eliminator.
"I'm hoping I'm back to my best and then give it a couple of fights. He's got a couple of fights lined up against some European fighters, so hopefully by the end of the year, that fight will have matured into one of the biggest all-British clashes. Hopefully there might be a world title or an eliminator for a world title, because he's going at such a trajectory, he could get to a world title before me."
